Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the origin of artistic creation with the code of animality(it exists inside and outside of the human being). The origin of the creation of works, which have been the object of wonderment, was also a great concern to the traditional philosophers. As you know, Plato was trying to solve this mystery by interpreting it as ‘divine madness’, Aristotle as ‘mimesis or melancholy’, Kant as ‘genius’, and Nietzsche as ‘Dionysus’. Our study is an attempt to transform, revise, and reinterpret old solutions in a new framework of ‘zoopoetics’, reflecting a few achievements of modern Animal Studies. In short, the result of the most radical philosophical reflection on art is zoopoetics, and the goal of this paper is to secure philosophical foundations of the zoopoetics. Based on the Animal-philosophy and Art-philosophy of modern philosophers including Heidegger, Agamben, and Derrida, our study will lay the groundwork for authentic zoopoetics. In our discourse zoopoetics is not limited to the texts, in which animals appear. Also, it is not limited to the poetries, in which animals are used as a kind of figurative, personalized, or empathized object. The zoopoetics, of course, draws attention to the works including animals that revolt against human violence, such as “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville. But the scope of zoopoetics is much wider. Rather, it is the poetics about works created(poiesis) by the animal(anima/life) borrowing the artist’s body. Whether or not a non-human creature emerges in the work, it is not a crucial issue. Moreover, although it is named as poetics, it does not refer to areas limited to language arts or poetries. Finally, this paper shows that animal and human can be encountered in ‘the aesthetic’ and new meanings of them can be obtained within the aesthetic relation between them.
