이 연구는 전근대기의 시각적ㆍ언어적 매체에 표현된 비인간동물의 은유 속에서 인간중심성의 태도가 고착되어온 상황을 파악하고 나아가 그 은유의 이면에 자리하고 있었던 비인간동물의 행위성(agency)을 찾아내어 이를 현실의 매체로 소환하고자 하는 시도이다. 이 연구는 꿩[雉]을 사례로 택하여, 첫째 동아시아 문예에서 수꿩과 조선후기 회화와 문학에서 수꿩의 상징성과 조선후기 회화와 문학에서 부상한 암꿩의 비유 속에서 인간중심적 속성을 성찰하였다. 둘째로는 꿩을 사냥과 요리의 대상으로 삼았던 실생활의 기록 속에서 인간의 면밀한 꿩 관찰의 역사를 제시함으로써 관심과 관찰이 은유의 형성 속에 선행하였음을 살폈으며, 이를 근거로 필자는 은유의 표현에서 꿩의 행위성을 추적하는 해석을 시도하였다. 이는 전근대 문예 속 동물 은유가 인간 중심적 내용을 전달하는 매체에서 벗어나 동물 자체를 다시 만나도록 하는 매체로 바꾸어 읽힐 수 있음을 뜻한다. 이 연구는 ‘인류세’에 직면한 인간 연구자가 인류 문명사의 인간중심성 문제를 다각적으로 성찰하고 교정하고자 한 노력이며, 특히 인간과 비인간동물의 공존을 모색하고자 인간이 주의를 기울여 비인간동물의 주체적 행위성을 찾고 정감적으로 대응해야 한다는 요구에 부합하고자 한 시도이다. 동물 서사 속 의인화된 비유 속에서 동물 자체의 행위와 동물과 인간의 만남을 추적한 이 연구는, 동물 서사의 문예적 유산을 비인간동물의 행위를 찾는 방향으로 해석하고, 향유하고, 활용할 수 있음을 제안한다.
Abstract
This research attempts to identify and subsequently summon the agency of non-human animals that has been obscured behind anthropocentric attitudes within metaphors depicting non-human animals in visual and linguistic media of the pre-modern era. The study selects the pheasant as a case study. Firstly, it reflects on the anthropocentric attributes within literary representations of pheasants in East Asian literature, focusing on the symbolism of male and female pheasants in late Joseon paintings and literature. Secondly, it presents human attitudes towards pheasants as targets for hunting and cooking in everyday life, alongside a detailed history of human observations of pheasants. This explains that observations of pheasants preceded their metaphoric representations in pre-modern times. Based on this premise, the author attempts to interpret the agency of pheasants in metaphorical representations, thereby suggesting the relevance of pre-modern metaphors to contemporary media. This study represents an effort by researchers facing the “Anthropocene” to reflect on and correct the anthropocentric issues in the history of human civilization, particularly seeking to explore the coexistence of humans and non-human animals. It aims to meet the demand that humans should pay attention to and ensure the subjective agency of non-human animals, by tracking the actions of animals themselves within anthropomorphized metaphors in animal narratives, interpreting, enjoying, and utilizing the literary heritage of animal narratives from the perspective of non-human animals.
