한국어 사용자의 손짓언어 연구 - 잡기/쥐기 손짓을 중심으로 -

이 연구에서는 우리가 일상적으로 사용하는 개념구조의 모습이 언어표현과 함께 실현되는 손짓에 반영된다는 가설에서 출발하여 토론 프로그램에 출연한 참여자의 손짓을 분석하였다. 분석을 통해 언어표현과 손짓의 상관관계가 분명하게 존재하며, 토론 참여자들에게서 공통적으로 가상의 물체를 잡는 손짓이 가장 빈번하게 나타난다는 사실을 발견하였다. Lakoff & Johnson(1980)을 비롯한 인지언어학자들이 수많은 무형의 추상적 개념들을 다루기 위해 인지적으로 그것들을 윤곽 짓고 실체화하는 것과 같은 존재론적 은유라는 개념화 방식을 사용한다고 하였는데, 가상의 물체를 손으로 잡거나 꼭 쥐는 것과 같은 손짓을 사용하는 것은 바로 대표적인 존재론적 은유인 개체 은유에 근거한다고 볼 수 있다. 이 개체 은유를 사용함으로써 우리는 많은 종류의 추상적 개념들을 다룰 수 있게 된다. 토론 참여자들은 말을 하면서 그들의 의도에 맞게 손에 들고 있는 가상의 물체를 만지고 잡고 그것을 잡은 상태에서 흔들기도 하고 또 그것의 크기를 키우거나 줄이고 해체하는 손짓을 함으로써 사건이나 행위의 다양한 국면들을 이해하고 처리한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 그 가상의 물체의 모양을 떠올리는 손짓을 하기도 하며 그것을 손가락 끝으로 모아 쥐거나 쥐는 힘을 조절하여 그 사건이나 행위를 대하는 화자의 태도나 입장을 전달한다는 점을 볼 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper explores the Korean language user's hand gestures within the framework of cognitive linguistics. Human body languages provide good evidences of an interrelation of physical experiences, cognitive processes, and language. In cognitive linguistic approach, the concept structure is motivated by physical experiences, cognitive linguists call this process ‘embodiment’. This paper considers that the hand gestures reflect the concept structure such as entity metaphor, a kind of ontological metaphor. Understanding our experiences in terms of objects allows us to pick out parts of our experience and treat them as discrete entities of a uniform kind(Lakoff & Johnson 1980: 25). Catching imaginary entity gesture were most frequently in this research, which is the entity metaphors suggested by Lakoff & Johnson(1980). The speakers touched a virtual object in their hand and motioned to raise the dismantling or reducing its size while speaking. It means that we use the entity metaphor in everyday verbal/nonverbal language.
