초록
This paper aims to explore metaphoric co-speech gestures of candidates in the U.S. Presidential Debate in 2015. We collected data from four full video clips of the U.S. Republican and Democratic presidential debates, and focused especially on significant types of gestures whose construals rely on the speaker’s metaphorical conceptualization of linguistic contents. The metaphors that this paper focuses on are ASSEMBLIES ARE CIRCLES, IDEAS ARE OBJECTS, and ACTIONS ARE MOTIONS. These analyses provide systematic explanations of how conceptual metaphors motivate interlocutors to represent and grasp meanings conveyed by the non-verbal modalities.
