Abstract

In this study, self-disclosure patterns were analyzed, and the educational implications for concretizing the concept of self-disclosure were identified. These originated from psychology and speech communication education. The self-disclosure patterns and strategic use of self-disclosure in the reality dating entertainment program “Heart Signal 4” were analyzed. After transcribing participants’ speech into the application ClovaNote, the self-disclosure patterns of speech were qualitatively analyzed. Analyzing them within the framework of descriptive, emotional, and evaluative self-disclosure revealed that evaluative self-disclosure not only functioned negatively in conversation but also drove descriptive self-disclosure and functions in various ways (e.g., empathy and humor). Descriptive self-disclosure complements evaluative and emotional self-disclosure and reduces the burden on speakers and listeners. In this study, we conceptualized “mediated self-disclosure,”which reveals oneself through surrounding objects. This method reveals one's tendencies using surrounding objects or the surrounding environment as a topic in a conversational situation. This study is significant as it demonstrates the strategic use of self-disclosure.
