Abstract

This study examines Jung Ji-Yong’s children’s poems as formative works produced during his early poetic development, positioning them as part of his literary experimentation and identity formation. It argues that Jung employed a range of indirect strategies to circumvent colonial censorship, embedding a nuanced awareness of sociopolitical reality within these texts. The poems “Seojjok Hanul(Setting Sun),” “Tti(Belt),” and “Hanul Honja Pogo(Pyung)(Alone Looking at the Sky(Bottles))” critically depict a world marked by violence and existential threat. “Seojjok Hanul” evokes images of blood, fire, and war through the motif of the setting sun; “Tti” deconstructs the artificiality of hierarchical social structures symbolized by belts; and “Hanul Honja Pogo” reconstructs folktale-based defensive mechanisms as a way of confronting a menacing reality. The poems “Gamnamu(Ripe Persimmon)” and “Neomeoganeun Hae(The Setting Sun)” employ metaphor to articulate themes of exploitation and resistance. In “Gamnamu,” the crow that pecks at the ripe persimmon and, in “Neomeoganeun Hae,” the fire crow that devours the rooftops of the fields both symbolize imperial forces plundering national resources. The speaker in “Gamnamu” appropriates the refrain of a traditional folksong—“Sound to Drive Away Birds”—to take direct action against the crow, while the speaker in “Neomeoganeun Hae” draws on the myth of shooting down the sun(射日) to envision the crow’s expulsion. In this context, the setting sun (落日) operates as a symbolic dismantling of the rising sun (旭日), the emblem of Japanese imperialism The poems “Gyeoultbam(Winter Night)” and “Haebaraki-ssi(Sunflower Seed)” explore the potential for social engagement and collective practice. “Gyeoultbam” presents an ethic of participation through the fragile solidarity of small lights enduring a time of darkness, while “Haebaraki-ssi” functions as a metaphor for the children’s song movement, reflecting Jung’s vision of literary action and cultural intervention. Taken together, these analyses demonstrate that Jung Ji-Yong’s children’s poetry—while situated within the genre of children’s literature—also served as a poetic form through which he articulated awareness of colonial oppression, offered veiled critique, and envisioned the possibility of practical resistance.
