Abstract

East Asian philosophy can become modern philosophy when it intervenes in contemporary debates and agendas to speak. Global warming and animal rights are topics that are actively being discussed now. Can we present an original argument for a world in which humans and animals can coexist in East Asian philosophy? This article attempts to examine the possibility of discussing animal rights in the intrinsic context of East Asian philosophy. To this end, we would like to discuss several aspects of this. 1) Humans and animals are completely different in ancient Confucianism. 2) Humans and animals are partially similar to each other. 3) Humans and animals have something in common. The point is as follows. 1) When an animal is a beast, the danger is highlighted, and as an adjective, it is used as an epithet for humans and becomes an object of meat consumption. In this situation, animals could not live with humans through projects such as flood control and were deported out of bounds. 2) When animals were benevolent being, they could practice human virtues and predicted the emergence of an ideal king. In addition, animals can communicate with humans through art(music and dance). At this time, animals can partially communicate with humans in a specific context. Mencius’ “unbearable mind-heart theory” and Xunzi’s “perception theory” can provide a bridge through which humans can communicate with animals. In addition, it can provide the basis for animal rights in the context of studying abroad in ancient times. In the Joseon Dynasty, the relationship between Sukjong and Geummyo was not just a pet but an example of a companion. Sukjong and Geummyo share their daily lives and communicate through names, without looking for each other only when necessary, and when Sukjong dies, Geummyo suffers from loss. It can be said that Sukjong treated Geummyo as equal to humans according to Mencius’ unbearable mind-heart theory and Xunzi’s perception theory. Sukjong and Geummyo are examples that are close to the concept of animal rights beyond the limits of the times. This article explores the theoretical basis for East Asian philosophy to participate in the discussion of animal rights, starting from the perspective of ancient Confucianism in the above discussion. After that, it will be possible to present the argument of Confucianism in the debate of modern society by finding data surrounding animal rights in the history of Confucianism and clarifying related issues.
