Abstract

This study discusses the color senses of the Chinese reflected in characters of the Chinese language. This paper through The Eastern Han Dynasty “Shuo Wen Jie Zi” and ancient books, to explore the meaning of traditional color Chinese. Color is closely related to the theory of the five elements. The five line is “four directions plus the middle”, that is, East (wood, blue), South (fire, red), Middle (soil, yellow), West (gold, white), North (water, black). This idea has been affecting Chinese life since ancient times. Red is bright, so it often appears in festive, Chinese New Year and wedding. Yellow ancient noble color expression of dignity, accounting for five of central line, the middle monarch reign of the Quartet, so on behalf of the emperor’s color. The “green” in the five line on behalf of the East, but also refers to the “black green” also refers to the grass. “White” stands for the West in the five line, the original meaning is the white of the sun. The ancients called the sun “day”, so the “white” as the symbol of the word “color”, mostly from bright meaning to white. Black color, ancient Moxing penalty, so for more derogatory. It extends to the dark sky, black objects. Also expressed resolute integrity, generous, and very rare etc.. The color is divided into color and intermediate color , especially the colors, such as red, green, blue, purple, is the ancient Chinese has aesthetic consciousness. Study on the color Chinese characters were found with ancient cloth, dyeing is very closely related. The concept of color entailment and clothing color has been lightly mentioned in this paper. But I hope to do some research in the future.
