‘사당패’ 관련 名稱에 대한 史的 考察

이 글은 사라진 ‘사당패’와 관련된 용어들의 시대적인 개념과 역사적 변천과정을 살펴 본 글이다. 그 결과로 도출한 본고의 요지는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연희집단으로서의 ‘사당패’는 조선 중기부터 출현했으며, 그 명칭은 ‘거사배’‘가리내패’‘사당패’‘남사당패’, ‘여사당패’로 史的 변천과정을 거치며 사용되었다. 이들 명칭은 자신들보다는 주로 제3자에 의해 붙여졌고, 각 용어는 그 용어가 사용되던 시기의 집단적 특징을 잘 드러내고 있다. 특히 이 집단을 통칭하는 ‘사당패’라는 용어는 여자 구성원인 ‘사당’의 역할이 강조되면서 쓰였는데, 그 시대적 의미는 대개 부정적이다. 둘째, 19세기 말에서 20세기 초의 ‘남사당패’는 오늘날 줄타기, 덜미, 덧뵈기 등 대여섯 종목을 연희하는 ‘남사당패’와는 구별되며, 남자로만 구성된 것을 제하고는 ‘사당패’와 다를 바 없는 집단이다. 그러므로 오늘날의 ‘남사당패’는 그 명칭만 ‘사당패’의 것을 이어받았지, 공연내용에서는 전혀 다른 집단으로 변모하였다. 셋째, ‘사당패’의 구성원을 말하는 ‘거사’와 ‘사당’은 조선조에서 이 집단의 남녀 연희자를 말하는 명칭으로 사용되었는데, ‘남사당패’가 생긴 이후 ‘남사당’, ‘여사당’이란 명칭과 함께 혼용되었다.
Abstract
This is a study about the term 'Sadangpae'. On this paper, the historical changes and the periodical concept of 'Sadangpae' will mainly be treated First, as a performing group, 'Sadangpae' was first to be seen in the middle of Joseon dynasty. Their names has been changed into 'Geosabae' → 'Karinaepae' →'Sadangpae' → 'Namsadangpae', 'Yeosadangpae'. Their names has been named not by themselves, but by the people from outside. At the same time, it indicates the characteristics of the group. Especially, a common name 'Sadangpae' expresses the important role of woman group member 'Sadang'. The periodical meaning of 'Sadangpae' was generally negative. Second, the term 'Namsadangpae' has been through complete changes since the late 19th. In late 19th and early 20th, the term 'Namsadangpae' meant male members only 'Sadangpae' group. But, nowadays the term 'Namsadangpae' changed into the name of one performing group. They mainly performed different kind of shows such as 'Jultagi', 'Deolmi', 'Deotboegi'. In conclusion, the only common point between the group 'Namsadangpae' and 'Sadangpae' is that their name both have 'sadangpae' on their name. Things that they performed were completely different. Third, Since 'Namsadangpae' has been showed, the term 'geosa' and 'sadang' meaning male and female performers in Joseon dynasty, used mixed with the term 'Namsadang' and 'Yeosadang'.
