판소리의 영화화 과정에 나타난 문제점 - 임권택의 <춘향뎐>을 중심으로 -

임권택의 <춘향뎐>은 마치 뮤직 비디오 기법을 활용한 일종의 뮤지컬 영화이다. 이 영화는 <조상현 창본 춘향가>를 충실하게 각색한 영화로, 미장아빔의 형식을 취하고 있다. 판소리는 심리 묘사보다 사건 중심으로 되어 있어 영화와 유사하기 때문에 각색에 유리하지만, 그 문학적 특성은 영화로 만드는 데 장애 요소가 된다. <춘향뎐>은 판소리의 여러 가락과 영상의 상호 조화를 추구하여 일정한 성과를 거두었다. 반면에 판소리 가사를 그대로 영상으로 옮기려고 하였기 때문에 현장음이 살지 못하고 작위성이 확대되었으며, 해학성이 위축되는 결과를 가져왔다. 임권택은 영화를 교육적 수단으로 보는 입장을 취하면서, 영화 <춘향뎐>을 통해 판소리 <춘향가>의 특성을 알리고 나아가 판소리 자체의 필요성, 현재성, 고유성 등을 관객들에게 전달하려고 하였다. 하지만 이러한 계몽성이 과도하게 표출된 점이 문제였다. 인물을 통해 감독의 의도를 그대로 전달함으로써 관객의 상상력을 위축시켰고, 상업 영화가 지녀야 할 흥미 요소도 감소시켰던 것이다.
Abstract
The style of the film, Chun-hyang directed by Lim, Gweon-taek is very unique. The film is adapted faithfully from a work of pansori of the same name. Pansori, a kind of Korean traditional theater, has advantage of being adapted into film because of its linear story line. However, its literary characteristics resist film. The film, Chun-hyang gets good results through seeking the harmony between sound and visual elements. On the other hand, very faithful turning the lyrics of pansori into film result in loss of field sounds, enlargement of artificiality, and shrinking of humor. Lim, Gweon-taek, the director of the film, had the notion that the purpose of film was to teach the audience about the characteristics of the pansori, Chun-hyang as well as the necessity, the meaning in our times, the originality of pansori. In the end, his notion has no actual power because he emphasize the enlightenment in the film. In addition, the film which was primarily commercial has made the imagination of audience inactive.
