Abstract

Yongmoonjeon is a literary work that depicts the predestined self-realization process of Yongmoon who arrived from a celestial world. Sustained by the celestial world, he successfully achieves his personal goals. Although he experiences certain conflicts with his family and country, he remains focused on his objectives and achieves them. This offers young students the opportunity to deliberate on the essential meaning of self-realization, the most important task during that period of life. Currently, the self-realization discourse for young people is contradictory. It emphasizes the value of individuality, but simultaneously confers supreme values on prominent careers and social status. Young people are persuaded to suppress their individual values and aim for common goals approved by the media. Since this distorts the fact that self-realization accompanies conflict with one’s environment, it should be examined. The narrative of Yongmoonjeon is meaningful in this context. It describes how a man fulfills his potential from the celestial world by defying the restrictions of family and country placed on him in the earthly world. Yongmoonjeon not only displays a man’s conflict with his environment, but also demonstrates his efforts to overcome those conflicts with celestial assistance, symbolizing his own self-conscious individual identity and values. Thus, Yongmoonjeon can be evaluated as a work that enables young readers pay attention to inevitable conflicts with environment when they attempt self-realization, gaining self-confidence through belief in the power of positive self-identity.
