Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effect of crime-related media consumption on perceptions of criminal profilers and to investigate whether cognitive characteristics moderate this relationship. Results indicated that increased consumption of crime-related media was associated with higher misperceptions of criminal profilers. Moderation analyses revealed that misperceptions were greatest among individuals with high Need for Cognition and low Media Literacy. In contrast, misperceptions were lowest among those with high levels of both NC and ML. Overall, the findings demonstrate the role of crime-related media in shaping public perceptions of criminal profilers and highlight how the interaction of cognitive characteristics can moderate these effects. Finally, limitations and implications of the study were discussed.
