범죄자 프로파일링 관련 신문기사 내용분석

학계와 실무자들을 중심으로 점차 범죄자 프로파일링에 대한 관심이 높아지면서, 언론에서도 최근 수사기법으로서의 범죄자 프로파일링을 소개하거나 특정 범죄 사건과 관련하여 프로파일러들의 역할이나 활약을 다루는 신문기사의 수가 늘어나고 있다. 그러나 이러한 기사들 가운데 범죄자 프로파일링에 대한 일종의 ‘환상’을 기반으로 쓰여져, 오히려 대중에게 범죄자 프로파일링에 대한 잘못된 편견이나 오해를 양산하는 경우도 적지 않다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 범죄자 프로파일링과 관련 있는 신문기사들의 내용분석을 통해 대중들에게 범죄자 프로파일링의 정의와 기능이 어떠한 방식으로 전해지고 있으며, 프로파일링 기법에 대한 전반적 인식이 어떠한지, 또한 개선점으로 지적되고 있는 사항은 무엇인지를 조사하고자 하였다. 연구 대상으로 한국언론진흥재단의 기사통합 검색시스템인 KINDS(Korea Integrated Newspaper Database System; http://www.kinds.or.kr/)를 통해 1990년 1월 1일부터 2011년 3월 12일까지 국내 뉴스 기사 중에서 ‘프로파일링’을 주제어로 하여 검색된 총 157건의 신문 기사의 내용을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 우선 국내에서 발생한 특정 범죄 사건 관련 신문기사 중 강호순 사건이 총 41건(26.1%)에서 언급되어 가장 높은 빈도를 차지하였고, 그 외 정남규 사건이 27건(17.2%), 유영철 사건이 26건(16.6%)으로 그 뒤를 이었다. 다음으로 기사에서 언급된 사건의 범죄 유형을 살펴보면, ‘연쇄 살인 사건’이 총 62건(39.5%)에서 언급되어 가장 높은 빈도를 차지하였고, 그 다음으로는 ‘무/이상 동기 범죄’가 29건(18.4%)으로 많았다. 또한 프로파일링의 기능에 대하여 언급된 내용을 살펴보면, ‘범죄자 심리·행동분석’이 총 54건(34.4%)의 기사에서 언급되어 가장 높은 빈도를 차지하였고, 그 다음으로 ‘용의자 범위 좁히기’가 35건(22.3%), 용의자 자백 이끌어내기’가 32건(20.4%)으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 기사에서 드러난 프로파일링에 대한 인식을 살펴보면, ‘향후 활약 기대’가 36건(22.9%)으로 가장 많았고, ‘효과 입증’이 29건(18.5%) 등 긍정적인 인식이 대다수를 차지하였으며, 이에 비해 부정적인 인식은 ‘과대 포장’ 등 단 3건에 불과한 것으로 나타났다. 이 밖에 프로파일링에 대한 개선점으로는 ‘시스템 구축’과 ‘전문 인력 양성’에 대한 필요성을 제기한 기사가 각각 15건(9.6%)으로 가장 높은 빈도를 차지했다. 마지막으로, 후속 연구에 대해서 논의하였다.
Abstract
As both academics and practitioners have recently shown tremendous interest in offender profiling, the number of newspaper articles on offender profiling has gradually increased. However, some of these newspaper articles, which were written without a basic understanding of offender profiling, may produce illusions about offender profiling. Therefore, the present study explored how the definition and function of offender profiling was described in newspaper articles and what evaluations had been made on offender profiling by using a content analysis. Through the newspaper search engine of Korea Press Foundation, KINDS(Korea Integrated Newspaper Database System), a total of 157 newspaper articles on offender profiling which were written between January 1st, 1990 and March 12th, 2011 were analyzed. As a result, we found that the number of articles on the case of Kang, Ho Sun was biggest, followed by Jeong, Nam-Kyu and Yoo Young-Chul. Also, the type of crime that was most frequently mentioned was serial murder. Regarding the function of offender profiling, 'analyzing criminal mind and behavior' was most frequently mentioned, followed by 'narrowing down the suspects' and 'making the suspect confess the crime'. Furthermore, most of the evaluations on offender profiling turned out to reflect positive expectations, and negative reviews were very few, stating that offender profiling was overestimated. Finally, suggestions for future research were made.
