창극 <다른 춘향>(2014)에 활용된 무대 영상의 양상과 작품의 지향

본고는 2014년에 국립극장에서 공연된 창극 <다른 춘향>을 대상으로, 무대에서 활용된 영상의 양상과 그것이 가져온 효과를 <다른 춘향>의 지향과 관련하여 살펴본 연구이다. <다른 춘향>에서는 비디오 영상, 라이브 영상이 적극적으로 활용되었는데, 비디오 영상은 작품의 시공간성을 중첩함으로써 이야기를 입체적으로 만들어 춘향 이야기에 대한 다층적 경험을 관객에게 선사하였다. 그리고 라이브 카메라는 현장에서 벌어지는 무대를 스크린에 띄움으로써 인물의 감정을 몰입감 있게 관객에게 전달하였고, 현장성을 풍부하게 하였다. <다른 춘향>은 기존의 창극 <춘향전>과 두 가지 점에서 남다른 지향을성취하였다. 하나는 사랑에 대한 강한 신념을 가진 춘향을 통한 순수한 사랑의 가치이고, 다른 하나는 오늘날 사회 현실에 대한 비판과 풍자의 목소리다. 기실 이러한 점은 고전소설 『춘향전』에 이미 함의된 바이나, <다른춘향>은 오늘날의 언어와 표현 수단으로 동시대성을 지향했다. 현대적 옷을 입은 춘향은 수절과 정절이라는 유교적 관념에 얽매이지 않은 채 순수한 사랑의 화신이 될 수 있었고, 현대적 시공간은 전통사회의 문제가 아닌오늘날 사회의 부조리를 드러내는데 유효하게 작동하였다. 그리고 무대 영상은 이를 적절하게 보여주는 수단으로 활용되었다. 본 연구는 이러한 과정을 살핌으로써 향후 무대 영상이 ‘새로운’ 고전을 만드는 데 유효하게 기능할 수 있음을 보여준 의미가 있다.
Abstract
This study examines the aspects of the videos utilized on stage in the Changgeuk Different Chunhyang, performed at the National Theater in 2014, and analyzes the effects these elements had in relation to the work's direction. In Different Chunhyang, the performance combined the actors’ onstage acting with video footage and live visuals projected onto a screen. These elements overlapped the spatiotemporal dimensions of the work, offering the audience a novel experience of the classic narrative Chunhyangjeon. Furthermore, they enhanced the audience's immersion in the characters and amplified the immediacy of the performance, thereby fostering greater focus on the work. Different Chunhyang achieved distinct goals in two respects compared to the traditional Changgeuk Chunhyangjeon. One was the powerful belief in love embodied by Chunhyang and the extraordinary strength of the love she pursued. The other was the critical and satirical commentary on contemporary social realities. While these aspects were already implicit in the classic novel Chunhyangjeon, Different Chunhyang pursued contemporaneity through modern language and modes of expression. Above all, its use of video technology to illustrate these qualities serves as an excellent example of how stage visuals can effectively function in creating "new" classics in the future.
