Abstract

This study explores the applicability of gamification as an instructional method in classical literature education and derives key insights for enhancing its effectiveness. Classical literature holds significant historical and cultural value, but is often perceived as an unfamiliar and challenging subject by the digital-native generation. Therefore, this study seeks to identify ways to make classical literature more accessible to learners by incorporating gaming elements into the teaching process. Defined as the application of game mechanics in non-game contexts to foster engagement and help learners naturally achieve educational objectives, gamification is adopted to enhance classical literature classes. The theoretical research framework examines the definition and principles of gamification and considers its potential applications in educational contexts. Gamification extends beyond merely adding fun elements by introducing structured rules and clear objectives, ultimately allowing learners to experience both challenge and achievement. In educational settings, gamification is recognized as a powerful tool that encourages active learner participation, requiring a thoughtful design that incorporates essential game elements such as mechanics, dynamics, and resources. Quests and challenges can increase learners’ motivation, while real-time feedback and collaborative problem-solving processes strengthen interactions among learners. As demonstrated in previous studies, these game elements have the potential to maximize educational outcomes. Next, a project-based learning approach in which students created gamified classical literature lessons was applied to students majoring in Korean education. The students were tasked with creating instructional plans for middle and high school students and developing reports on gamification-based teaching methods. Using various game mechanics, dynamics, and resources, the aim was for students to design their lessons to align with the learning content and ensure that educational goals were met. However, several challenges were identified in the process. Accordingly, key implications were derived for effective gamified classical literature lesson design, such as the close alignment of game elements with educational objectives, use of diverse problem types and the promotion of strategic thinking, sustained motivation of learners, and enhancement of collaboration and interaction among students. Based on these findings, this study offers concrete methods for effectively utilizing gamification in classical literature education and demonstrates its potential benefits. This research contributes to the assessment of the applicability and efficacy of gamification in classical literature education and is expected to enhance learning motivation and student engagement in actual educational settings.
