Abstract

This paper analyzes the rapid transformation experienced by Taiwan’s China Studies amid the structuring of U.S.-China strategic competition into a “New Cold War” framework since 2017, employing the theoretical frameworks of securitization and politics of knowledge. Taiwan’s China Studies transcends pure academic inquiry to embody policy research directly linked to political survival and identity, with research environments undergoing profound reorganization as cross-strait tensions escalate. The analysis reveals three key findings: First, “China” has been reframed from an object of economic, cultural, and academic cooperation to an existential security threat, with academic exchanges, field research, and data access becoming subjects of control. Second, government research funding and academic review systems that prioritize “China threat” research have institutionalized skewed knowledge production and researcher self-censorship. Third, the establishment of the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, restrictions on cross-strait academic exchanges, and limitations on National Archives materials have emerged as representative cases of securitized policies redefining academic boundaries. While these changes impose a triple burden on Taiwan's academia—weakening academic diversity, severing international networks, and creating methodological crises—they simultaneously catalyze methodological innovations such as digital archives and big data analysis, and paradoxically provide opportunities for Taiwan to emerge as an alternative hub for global China Studies. By systematically examining the impact of geopolitical tensions on knowledge ecosystems, this paper illuminates both the universality and particularity of studying the “other” in contexts of division and confrontation. Furthermore, it presents a comparative case for reflecting on the securitization and politicization dilemmas faced by China Studies in surrounding regions, including Korea, and derives practical implications for rebalancing academic autonomy and national security.
