In addition, this paper studied three types of shroud shoes; which it was made for original purpose, which it was possible to be offered as the shroud shoes in the actual used one and which it was for filling the coffin space not taken up by the corpse. As the result of consideration, this paper found two cases that the shroud shoes were made only for the shroud shoes and the actual used shoes were used as the shroud shoes for the cerement. Even if the shroud shoes could be used different materials depending on the type of outer garments, it was mainly black color and suggested silk or hemp as the materials, in the actual use, the shroud shoes made of silk fabrics were worn and decorative comparing with other the furnishing. This showed common to all men and women, and it was found through the portraits and records of those days. There were a lot of the shroud shoes that were sewn loosely and coarsely because it was made for the Seup-Ui, however, even if it was the shroud shoes, it can be presumed to be used usually because the ornately decorated or exquisitely embroidered Un Hye (like the shape of a cloud) and Chae Hye(the ornately decorated shoes) were excavated. This article supposed that the reason why it was that the kinds of garments would be comprised in the excavated garments, which were made normally, not for the cerement. Moreover, there is a case to put it for filling the coffin space not taken up by the corpse making it with special wishes. However, it is very rare to put shoes as the kinds of garments for filling the coffin. This article expects to help understanding various cultures of garments in the Joseon Dynasty.
Abstract
The footwear were made with many different materials and forms and worn throughout the Goryeo Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty from the period of the Three States. As the Seup-Ui is a garment for a body, it is called as the cerement. The shroud shoes for the Seup-Ui were used for dressing a corpse for burial, which were made of a paper or fabric in place of shoes. This article considered the form and characteristic and whether it could be actually worn or not by focusing on the shroud shoes in the Joseon Dynasty that were excavated.
