Abstract

In this study, the relationship between task conflict and team creativity and the corresponding moderating effects of transformational leadership and relationship conflict were examined. Data were collected from 57 teams (10 R&D teams, 25 product development teams, and 22 innovation teams). Within the teams, there were 57 leaders and 347 members from 13 organizations. Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. To avoid common method bias, team leaders were asked to answer a questionnaire eight weeks after team members responded to it. As per the results, task conflict was positively related with team creativity. Transformational leadership moderated the relationship between task conflict and team creativity. Task conflict was significantly positively related to team creativity in case of high transformational leadership. Relationship conflict moderated the relationship between task conflict and team creativity. Task conflict was significantly positively related to team creativity in case of high relationship conflict but negatively related to team creativity in case of low relationship conflict. According to these results, the implications and limitations of the study and suggestions for the future research were discussed.
