Abstract
This study explained how to classify the latent classes according to the degree of child maltreatment experiences during adolescence. Also, it found out whether or not there were any differences in early adulthood development outcomes between these latent classes. For the purposes of the study, a growth mixed model analysis was conducted using the NYPI Youth and Children Panel. Survey data came from the second to the sixth waves, which included data on maltreatment experiences, and the seventh wave, which collected data on early adulthood. According to the results of the growth mixture model analysis, the subjects of the study could be classified into three latent classes depending on the degrees of their experiences in child maltreatment. The first pattern, the decreased severity group, showed a higher initial value, and the slope for this class decreased over time (12.9%). The second group had a intermediate level in terms of initial value and an increased experience in child maltreatment during adolescence (9.7%). The third group had no experience in child maltreatment longitudinally (77.3%). The type of child maltreatment experience was related to the gender of adolescents and household income. The decreased severity group and increasing level of child maltreatment group took to smoking more in early adulthood and had higher levels of emotional problems such as attention concentration and aggression than those who had no experience of child maltreatment. On the other hand, their positive development outcomes such as self-esteem and satisfaction in life were found to be lower, and fewer of them gained college entrance. Based on these findings, the practical implications were also discussed in this study.
