Abstract

Han, Jeong-Im. 2004. Controlled Phonetics: Evidence from the Processing of Non-Phonemic Contrasts in Non-Native Language. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-4, 507-525. This study supports recent claims of phonetic knowledge (Kingston and Diehl 1994) with evidence from Korean speakers' perception of the optional phonetic variability such as stop epenthesis between the sonorant and fricative segments in English. Specifically this study examines how often English epenthetic stops are perceived by native Korean speakers as compared to Korean-English bilinguals and also native English speakers. The results of the study show that native Korean speakers correctly identified only small numbers of English epenthetic stops but there's a high correlation between perception of epenthetic stops and speakers' English proficiency, showing the possibility of the improvement of perception in such low-level phonetic details. These results suggest that phonetic implementation process can be controlled by speakers and thus should be learned by non-native language learners. (Konkuk University)
