Hong, Sung-Hoon. 2004. Phonological Complexity and Wellformedness: A Probabilistic Look at Korean ɨ～ø Alternation. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-4, 527-545. This paper examines how phonological wellformedness can be computationally calculated. Goldsmith (2001b) proposes that phonological wellformedness can be computed by phonological complexity, which is calculated from the probability values of the component unigrams and bigrams. We test Goldsmith's proposal against suffix ɨ～ø alternation in Korean, where two representative forms, one is wellformed and the other illformed, compete with each other. The results show that phonological wellformedness in general correlates with phonological complexity in a way that wellformed forms correspond to less 'complex' forms with smaller values of bigram probability.(Hansung University)
