Abstract

Jung, Yeun-Jin. 2004. NP-Splits, Word Order and Multiple Case Mystery. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-4, 547-587. The surface discontinuity of DP/NPs (and PPs) has been well attested in various constructions such as wh-constructions, extraposition, noun incorporation constructions, and so on. Of particular concern in this paper are a peculiar type of discontinuous construction, which is often called an "XP-split" construction in German and the Slavic languages, and two seemingly unrelated constructions, multiple subject/object constructions and floating quantifier construction in Korean. The main claim of this paper is that despite their superficial heterogeneity, those three constructions in Korean are all epiphenomena of the cross-linguistically prevailing operation "NP-Split". I will show that the purported NP-split analysis can provide a principled account of the otherwise perplexing properties shared by all those three constructions: (i) the pragmatically-conditioned word order, (ii) the fixed precedence relation among NP-splits, and (iii) the multiple Case marking problem.
