On Saliency in Multiple Nominative Constructions

Abstract
This paper argues that the Korean nominative marker can behave as a saliency marker as well as a Case marker. In this paper it has been shown that saliency of the nominative phrase appears on the syntaco-semantic and discourse levels. Two previous analyses were reviewed and a new proposal was presented based on this review. It is claimed that the notion Major subject of Yoon (2003) should be construed as a discourse notion in Korean and that the nominative marker brings about an increased c-commanding potential for the phrase in question. It has further been proposed that some Korean multiple nominative constructions involve nominal dependency relations instead of Case relations with verbs. (Kwangwoon University)
