Abstract
Yun, Yungdo. 2006. The Underlying Representation of Stem-final Segments in Korean P-irregular Predicates. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-4, 585-599. There has been controversy concerning the underlying representation (UR) of the stem-final segments of the so-called p-irregular predicates in Korean (e.g., [təp-t*a] 'is hot' vs. [təw-ə] 'to be hot'). Some researchers (such as Kim-Renaud 1974 and Ahn 1985 among others) argue that it is /p/, whereas others (such as C.-W. Kim 1968 and Sohn 1987 among others) argue that it is /w/. The underlying representation proposed in this paper is different from those of the previous researches. I claim that the phonological representation for the stem-final segment in p-irregular predicates is not fully specified in the UR. Their surface forms are determined by syllable structure in Korean. I propose that it is neither /p/ nor /w/ in the UR; it is [-consonantal, +labial] in the UR and realized as [u], [w], and [p] depending on its position within a syllable. (Korea Nazarene University)
