Abstract
Oh, Mira. 2006. Output-based Variants in Korean Inflectional Morphology, Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-1, 77-100. Systematic phonological similarities between morphologically related words which are unexpected given the phonotactics of the language have been dealt with by two kinds of models: inheritance models (Chomsky and Halle 1968; Kawahara 2001; Benua 1997) and attraction models (McCarthy 2005; Kenstowicz 1996; Steriade 1996). Both kinds of approaches mainly focus on one-to-one correspondence between the input (or output) and the output. They fail to deal with the fact that one input can match more than one distinct output depending on social contexts. For example, /pulɨ-ɨta/ 'sing-indicative' can surface either as [purɨda] (careful speech) or [pullɨda] (casual speech) in Korean, depending on the context. Korean inflectional morphology provides a rich set of sociolinguistic variants. Concentrating on phonological phenomena involved in sociolinguistic variation between careful and casual speech in Korean inflectional morphology, this paper introduces the Output-based model for variant formations. The Output-based Model accounts for variant formations through the interaction of constraints such as Realize Morpheme, OO-faithfulness constraints and IO-faithfulness constraints. The Output-based Model is distinguishable from previous models in characterizing the base. (Chonnam National University)
