Abstract
Kim, Il-Kyu and Chae, Hee-Rahk. 2007. A Syntactic Analysis of the [han N' ha-] Construction: An Indexed Phrase Structure Grammar Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-1, 63-84. Although the construction [han N' ha-] has a rather short history, it is widely used among young people in Korea. Few scholars have paid attention to it, but it has very interesting syntactic and semantic properties. This paper consists of two parts. Firstly, we are going to characterize the construction, on the basis of (morpho-)syntactic characteristics of its component elements han and ha-. Secondly, we will analyze its major syntactic properties, under an “Indexed Phrase Structure Grammar (IPSG)” framework. We will focus on two special phenomena: i) the unit [han N'] has a subject argument, which does not come from any of its components, ii) [han N'] is a verbal noun phrase categorically although none of its components have verbal properties. We will see that the IPSG framework is very effective in accounting for these phenomena, especially the first phenomenon. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)
