Abstract
In this paper, we provide an “Indexed Phrase Structure Grammar: IPSG” analysis (Chae 1992) of the Korean “Concord Adverbial Constructions,” on the basis of 채희락 (2002) and Chae (2003b). These constructions consist of a concord adverbial like manyak ‘if,’ pilok ‘although’ or amuli ‘however,’ and a verb with a particular ending which is required by the adverbial. These two elements can be separated from each other across clause boundaries and, hence, the constructions show the property of unbounded discontinuities. The relation between a concord adverbial and a verb which is modified by this adverbial can also be unbounded. One of the most significant properties of the constructions is that these unbounded relationships are not ordinary ones because they exhibit “downward movement” phenomena rater than “upward movement” phenomena. These phenomena pose a big challenge to multi-stratal approaches with the movement operation because most of them are constructed under the assumption that there are only upward movement phenomena in natural languages. However, the special properties of the constructions can be accounted for very effectively within the IPSG framework, which do not assume any movement at all. As an alternative to this approach, Chung (2003) provides a “scrambling” analysis of the constructions, whose arguments we show to be not very convincing.
