Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the grammatical and semantic properties of the particle 'elul'. Our findings indicate that the particle 'lul' as a component of 'elul' is not a determiner(or a pragmatic particle) which only involves in adding semantic contents. In contrast to other typical determiners like 'nun', 'to', or 'man', the distribution of the particle 'elul' is largely influenced by the meanings the noun and verb which the particle associate with. Particle 'e' can combine with particle 'lul' only when it conveys the meaning of 'goal' or 'object'. It is revealed that the semantic aspect of the particle 'lul' as a part of 'elul' is not much different from that of the particle 'lul' as a case marker. We argue that the particle 'elul' is a compound particle not a serial particle construction since the particle 'elul' cannot freely alternate with particle 'e' or 'lul' in many cases. In short, we show that the meaning of the particle 'elul' is an 'objectification' of the 'goal' of the action represented by a verb. (Yonsei University)
