Abstract
Kim, Mi-Ryoung. 2007. The acquisition of Korean stops: a longitudinal case study of an infant. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-3, 385-410. This paper investigates the acquisition of the three phonation types in Korean. Cross-linguistically, it has been a well-documented universal that voiceless unaspirated stops are mastered before aspirated or voiced stops. According to the universal, it is hypothesized that lax stops are acquired earlier than the other two stops because of their laryngeally unmarked and unspecified status. This hypothesis is tested through a longitudinal study of an infant's utterances from 2 months to 36 months. The results showed that lax stops were acquired quite late, compared to the other two stops. Among the three phonation types, tense stops were acquired the earliest. An open question is how the fact that tense stops were acquired earlier than lax stop can be accounted for under Korean consonantal phonology (Korea Cyber University).
