Abstract
It is well known in the literature on acquisition that children acquire liquids with difficulty in many languages. Until they completely acquire liquids, they adopt various adjustment strategies in the production of underlying liquids. In this paper, I analyse phenomena involved in the process of liquid acquisition of native Korean children based on previous studies on Korean child language acquisition. Specifically, I adopt the analytic method of the liquid acquisition of native Japanese children presented by Ueda & Davis(2001a,b). Based on previous studies on the liquid acquisition in Korean, I first show that for [r], native Korean children tend to produce [n] word-initially, and [d], [j], [ll] intervocalically. I then present an explanation of various acquisition stages through constraint re-ranking mechanism in Optimality Theory, adopting constraints based on not only phonological but also phonetical and acoustic motivation.
