Abstract
Shin, Seung-Hoon. 2007. Constraint Conjunction, Comparative Markedness and Precedence in Typology of Lenition. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-4, 607-626. Consonantal weakening or lenition where an intervocalic obstruent gets voiced, spirantized or both, has been understood by feature spreading within the framework of Feature Geometry. Given that such an account is problematic in the Underspecification model that requires the [voice] and [continuant] features to be underspecified, this paper explores patterns of lenition by reference to three recent alternatives of OT - Constraint Conjunction, Comparative Markedness and Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains. Constraint Conjunction, though it has no difficulty in accounting for the alternation, is turned out to have some theoretic flaws. Between the other two approaches, this paper specially focuses on whether OT-CC with Precedence can deal with the problematic case of one-step lowering, given that OT-CC is proposed to specify order of faithfulness violations. Based on the property of the alternation, this paper maintains that the notion of Comparative Markedness plays a crucial role and empirically accounts for the lenition typology by means of the two different types of violation, old and new.
