Abstract

The goal of this paper is to review the previous analyses of voicing assimilation in English (Borowsky 1999, Lombardi 1999, Grijzenhout 2000) and provide a more general account for it based on the local conjunction of faithfulness and markedness, namely, IDENT (VOICE) and *VOICE. The conjoined constraint bans a marked segment produced as a result of an unfaithful mapping.
