Abstract
Wee, Hae-Kyung. 2007. Intervention Effect and Information Structure, Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-4, 627-652. This study reviews the analysis of the intervention effects proposed by Beck (2006). Her theory is based on the so-called Alternative Semantics (AS) theory of Focus (Rooth 1985, 1992). Some important problems of this analysis are pointed out, and it is argued that they are ultimately due to the problems of the Alternative Semantics approach to focus. It is also shown that another kind of approach to focus, what is called the Structured Meaning (SM) analysis, specifically, a predicational approach to focus such as Lobner (1990), Chomsky (1976) etc., is more appropriate for an analysis of intervention effect and that it is free from the problems due to the AS.
