Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review Kim(1997)'s analysis framework in English texts, to analyse novel, essay, newspaper, and address with the framework, and to compare the results of the analyses of the genres. The linguistic knowledge and the world knowledge determine the event progression rank scheme which is composed of strong progression, weak progression, non-progression, and subordination. The analysis framework based on the event progression rank scheme analyses the novel The Pearl, the essay The Nature of Symbolic Language, a newspaper article Princess Diana, and the address Inaugural Address. The results showed that the telicity composed of achievement and accomplishment verb mainly determined the event strong progression, whereas the atelicity and pragmatic knowledge partially determined it. Particularly, the novel has the most event strong progression, which denotes the dynamic main line of the story.
