Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose the temporal system and the event progression system in discourse, and to testify the theoretical validity of the proposals in discourse. The event progression system is compossed of the event progression interpretation rule, the event progression structure, and the event progression rank scheme. The theoretical necessity of `order of mention principle, tense markers, temporal adverbs, semantic context, aktionsart, and world knowledge in deciding the temporal relationship among events can be proved in the system. Futhermore, it is argued that the temporal relationship among events is determined by definite time adverbials, the orderliness principle, the event progression interpretation, and the contextual information. The temporal system determined by GPT, temporal domain, and orderliness can solve the problems in analysing tense phenomena in texts. The framework required to analyse discourse is proposed by adding the event progression system to the temporal system. In this study, the frame can explain temporal relations among events, tense phenomena in discourse, and the meaning of tense markers of independent clauses. The correspondence between the proposals and their applications will be proved in discourse.
