Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review the event progression among events, and to testify the theoretical validity of the hypothesis that Complication and Peak has more foreground than Exposition and Complication of the macrostructure by analysing the event progressions in narrative texts. In order to achieve this purpose, The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Robinson Crusoe, The Old Man and the Sea, and The Pearl are analysed. The macrostructure consists of Abstract, Exposition, Complication, Peak, Conclusion, and Coda. In terms of temporal reference, the two outmost parts(Abstract and Coda) refer to speaker-now and the four inner parts(Exposition, Complication, Peak, Conclusion) refer to story-now. It is argued that the foreground is determined by tense, explicit temporal adverbs, the orderliness principle, lexical aspect, causal relation, and the contextual information. In this study, the hypothesis that Complication and Peak has more foreground than any other part is testified based on the results of text analyses.
