Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the syntactic realization of the NPs which take the thematic roles of Theme and Locative. Based on the analytic studies on the relationship between the two thematic roles both in English and Korean, we define that the Locative is the very realization of the location of the Theme. This stands as evidence for the idea that the Theme is more basic in the construction of propositional structures than the Locative. We support the idea that the Theme alone can constitute a propositional structure, but the Locative cannot. It is also discussed that when the two thematic roles compete, the Theme takes hold of the subject position, and that in sentence initial position, the Locative delivers the function of Topic, and the Theme usually attracts contrastive Focus.
