Abstract

In language, the anaphoric use of pronouns is the typical pattern, and thus little attention has been paid to the cataphoric use of pronouns. This study explores properties of cataphoric pronouns from an interactional perspective through an analysis of Korean conversational data. More specifically, this research deals with the usage of cataphoric pronominals in Korean conversation in terms of elaboration repair, a particular type of non-error self-repair, in which current speaker produces pronominal elements first, and then (s)he provides coreferential lexical full NPs for the pronominals retroactively. This study discusses types and functions of cataphoric pronominals in their interactional contexts in the following terms: (i) current speaker produces a coreferential lexical full NP retroactively, forming a cataphoric relation, (ii) next speaker produces a next-turn repair initiator (NTRI) to signal for more specific information, and (iii) next speaker produces an NTRI and a candidate lexical full NP, which is (un)confirmed in the next turn. After that, this research explores interactional motivations for the occurrence of cataphoric pronominals in terms of recipient design and a motivation for seeking clarification. Observation of the interactional motivations shows that there is a constant negotiation between an economic motivation and an iconic motivation among the participants, which is reflected in the choice of anaphoric or cataphoric relations in conversation.
