Abstract
Examining and comparing Choi (1999), Lee (2003), Kim (2004) and Choi (2004) which deal with contrast or focus, we identify the four categories which are called contrastive topic, contrastive focus, identificational focus, and information focus. Contrastive focus is distinguished from contrastive topic in terms of scalar implicature, exhaustivity, and topic vs. focus. The distinction between contrastive focus and identificational focus is not clear in many languages such as Hungarian and Finnish, but Korean shows a manifest morphological distinction between them, which guarantees the existence of the two categories. The relationship among the four categories is captured by the two features of [contrast] and [exhaustivity]: contrastive focus [+contrast, +exhaustivity], contrastive topic [+contrast, -exhaustivity], identificational focus [-contrast, +exhaustivity], and information focus [-contrast, -exhaustivity].
