Abstract
This research aims to identify the singing tradition of Gasa, which has been continued from singing Gasa enjoyed in the early Chosun dynasty to 12-Gasa sung up to now, and to weigh the possibility that a technique called partial singing could be used in the performance of singing Gasa. The singing tradition of Gasa can be learned through anthologies of songs such as Kogumgagok(古今歌曲) and Chunguyoungeun(靑丘永言). Kogumgagok was compiled at the comparatively early years among numerous anthologies which started to be compiled from the 18th century, and it contains many works of singing Gasa composed in the early Chosun dynasty. Some of Gasa works enlisted in Kogumgagok was preserved in the collection of Gasa works recorded in Chunguyoungeun and then again preserved in 12-Gasa. The possibility of partial singing can be examined in consideration of the lyrics-recording style in anthologies including Chungguyoungeun, the musical mode of 12-Gasa and the textual constitution of Gasa. Lyrics of every Gasa work recorded in Chungguyoungeun are nothing but a certain part of the whole lyrics. The musics of 12-Gasa are characterized by ending melodies that appear frequently in the middle of the music. Lyrics of Gasa are usually composed of several parts, which are not necessarily related to one another. Many consider Gasa as a difficult genre to sing because of its length. But if one sings a text of Gasa through the technique of partial singing, he can sing any part of the text as he wants, no matter how long the text may be. Besides, the partial singing allows one to sing many texts of Gasa on small number of musics. The partial singing is an important quality that distinguishes Gasa from Sijo.
