Abstract

This paper illustrated the author and characteristics of gasa(narrative poem) in series called Seung'ga. Seung'ga is composed of four gasas which contain the contents of one young married yangban man's love-making to a twenty year- old nun. For a long time, the author of Seung'ga has been talked up as Mumyeongssi(anonymous), Namdosa, Namchampan, Nam Chyeol, but the concrete life story and activities of the author has not been Known. This paper clarified that the author was Nam Hui(1671~1732) and the lover in poems was one Buddhist nun who became his concubine by analyzing the materials, such as Sipil written by Im Cheon-sang(1754~1822) and Chujegii by Jo Su-sam(1762~1849). Furthermore, I looked into the life story of the author and the achievement of his lifetime through the sillok(annals) and Seungjeongwon ilgi(Daily Records of the Royal Secretariat) and a clan register. Nam Hui lived in the area of Seoul and Bupyeong as a literati from the soldier class and was known for a grand appearance of a warrior and excellent writing. In his youth, he was not moderate in desire, and allured one nun and composed one gasa, which produced many different versions when it was well-known to the people. He held a government post in Uigeumbu(Correctional Tribunal) for a long period and in his later years, he became a man of great wealth by managing his property. I found that Seung'ga is a gasa of love produced in the late seventeenth century revealing a feeling of love between man and woman straightforwardly. And I presented a perspective of understanding the poems through the examination of the construction and transmission of Seung'ga.
