초록

This paper analyzes the morpho-syntactic properties of what is called “noun clause” in Traditional Grammar, which occurs as the unique type of that-clause in English, but occurs as four different types of clauses in Korean according to their leading complementizers. That is, the selecting complementizer of a noun clause in English is no more than that, while Korean has four different types of noun clause complementizers--‘-ko,’ ‘-ki,’ ‘kes’ and ‘-(u)m.’ Under the assumptions of Kim(2010, 2013), this study proposes that the that-clause in English should be classified into two different syntactic types: CP and DP in terms of the labelling algorithm suggested in Chomsky(2008, 2013, 2015), and argues, in parallel, that in Korean the noun clause led by ‘-ko’ is analyzed as CP, while the noun clauses led by ‘kes’ is analyzed as NP, and those led by ‘-ki’ and ‘-(u)m’ are as DP respectively. Besides, it comes to light that only the DP-type of that-clauses in English exhibit the island effect with regard to wh-movement, which is attributed to the so-called ‘Specificity Condition’ under the parametric variation between Korean and English with respect to the categorial types of noun clauses.
