'서왕가'의 주제의식과 18세기 불교사의 맥락

이 글은 <서왕가>의 문학적 성격을 해명하기 위한 일환으로, 수록문헌에서의 <서왕가>의 위치와, <서왕가> 수록의 시대적 맥락에 대해 살펴보았다. <서왕가>는 참선수행으로 깨달음을 얻은 ‘조사’가 염불중생을 데리고 극락세계로 가는 여정을 노래한 것으로, 그 과정에서 염불의 이유가 왕생과 성불에 있음을 강조하고 있다. 시적 화자가 ‘조사’로 설정되어 있는 점은 여타의 불교가사와 구별되는 <서왕가>의 특징적인 국면이다. 이 특징으로 인해 <서왕가>는 이 작품을 수록하고 있는 『염불보권문』 전체의 주제의식을 형성·강화하는 동시에, 이를 증명하는 기능을 담당하고 있다. 『염불보권문』의 편자는 제1∼3부에 ‘부처님의 말씀’·‘왕생인의 체험’·‘조사의 노래’를 차례대로 배치하여, 이 책의 주제의식을 표출하고 있기 때문이다. 여기에서 ‘부처’·‘왕생인’·‘조사’는 발화자이자, 증인이 되는 것이다. 『염불보권문』의 편자가 자신의 주장을 펴기 위해 경전·왕생담·<서왕가>를 그 근거로 내세우고 있는 이유는 당시의 불교계 상황과 관련이 있다. 칭명염불만으로 왕생·성불할 수 있음을 주장하는 『염불보권문』의 편찬은, 기존의 염불선적 경향에 대한 대안이자, 일종의 ‘염불운동’을 지향한 것이다. 새로운 움직임에는 비판과 반발이 따르기 마련이므로, 『염불보권문』의 편자는 자신의 주장이 교리적인 측면에서 옳은 것임을 입증해야 했고, 그 방법으로 제시한 것이 바로 ‘부처의 말씀’과 ‘조사의 노래’였던 것이다. 결국, <서왕가>는 일종의 염불운동을 지향한 『염불보권문』 편자의 의도 아래 편입 또는 창작된 것으로, 18세기 불교계의 새로운 움직임이 투영된 노래이자, 그 움직임을 선도하고 있는 노래라 할 것이다.
Abstract
As a part of this article, I have examined the context of the period in which the position of the Seowangga and the Seowangga are included in the document to clarify the literary character of the Seowangga. The Seowangga is a song of Enlightenment, which was enlightened by the practice of Zen Buddhism, and sings the journey to Paradise World with the birth of Buddha Buddhism. The fact that the poetic speaker is set as 'Patriarch' is a characteristic aspect of the Seowangga, which is distinguished from other Buddhist-Gasa. Due to this feature, the Seowangga is responsible for forming and strengthening the theme consciousness of the whole Yombulbogwonmun and for proving it. This is because the Buddha's words, the experience of rebirth in the Pure land, and the song of the Patriarch are arranged in turn in the first, second, and third parts of the Yombulbogwonmun, and the subject consciousness of this book is expressed. Here, 'Buddha' and 'Patriarch' are the talkers and witnesses. The reason why the compiler of Yombulbogwonmun is using the scriptures and the the Seowangga as the basis for his claim is related to the Buddhist situation of the time. Since the new movements are subject to criticism and repulsion, the compiler of Yombulbogwonmun has to prove that the claim is correct in the doctrinal aspect, and the method suggested by it was the Buddha's word and the song of the Patriarch. In the end, Seowangga is a song that is incorporated or created under the intention of the compiler of Yombulbogwonmun, and is a song that reflects the new movement of the 18th century Buddhist movement and leads the movement.
