Abstract

This study provides empirical evidence in relation to read aloud and spontaneous speech and how they differ in their acoustic features, especially in rhythm. For this purpose, two experiments were performed. It was found that speech type has an effect in the rhythm regardless of the L1, but it does in relation to the language the speaker speaks. Considering that English is widely known as a stress-based language and Korean a syllable-based language, speakers seemed to reflect their L1characteristics when they read the stories aloud in their L1. On the other hand, it seemed more difficult for both speakers to show their L1 characteristics in spontaneous speech where planning and processing occurs simultaneously.
