초록

This paper examines speech rhythm in English, Standard Korean and Korean advanced learners' English within the framework of Normalized Pairwise Variability Indices and other durational rhythmic measures. After critically reviewing the problems of traditional rhythm typology of stress-timed and syllable- timed languages, two experiments were conducted in order to systematically examine rhythmic differences among the three language groups. Experiment 1 was concerned with the rhythm perception and Experiment 2 aims to investigate the durational aspects of spoken stimuli. Perception experiment revealed that Korean listeners have three-way contrast when they were asked to identify rhythmic differences. In Experiment 2, two variables of Vowel Portion (%V) and Normalized Pairwise Variability Indices turned out to faithfully reflect the rhythmic differences among the three language groups out of 5 variables used in Experiment 2: the Korean language has a relatively higher Vowel Portion value than the English language, while Korean has lower Normalized Pairwise Variability Indices than English leaving Korean advanced learners' English in-between scale.
