Abstract

This paper aims to elucidate the meaning and structure of “Hwaam Gugok”, a poem by Yu Bak, a Confucian scholar from the mid-18th century. By analyzing the structure of “Hwaam Gugok”, I will reveal what meaning this song had for the composer Yu Bak, and furthermore, I will read traces of how a scholar from a rural area responded to the problems of his life in the 18th century. “Hwaam Gugok” begins with the first verse, which presents a place called Hwaam, and reveals two emotions in the second and third verses. The emotions of excitement and satisfaction shown in the second verse are concretized as leisure in the fourth, fifth, and sixth verses. The emotions of sorrow shown in the third verse are concretely shown in the seventh and eighth verses and are intended to appease them. The emotion of leisure is a cultural emotion pursued by Confucian scholars, while worry and concern are personal emotions experienced by rural scholars. The place where these two are integrated, and where the author faces and accepts his own miserable life while creating pride and identity as a nobleman, is Baekhwaam. Baekhwaam is a space that the author created and achieved within the 18th-century culture. Baekhwaam is an artificial natural space of the 18th century and a space that comforts and raises the author, a noblewoman of the 18th century. Based on Baekhwaam, the space where this song begins and unfolds, the speaker acknowledges his life as a savage in the 9th verse and, while knowing the sorrow of that life, yearns for the day when he can boast about his life. “Hwaam Gugok” sings of Baekhwaam, a space that gives cultural identity and pride in life to Yu Bak, a savage of the 18th century who was unable to go out and lived as a savage in the countryside. The meaning of this song is to confess Baekhwaam and the emotions felt from that life that unfolded within it, and finally to show integration and positivity. The meaning of “Hwaam Gugok” as a song of this era is that it shows the appearance of an 18th-century nobleman who resolved his worries in a garden decorated with flowers
