Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the characteristics of the newly discovered Sijochaek and its status as a songbook. Sijochaek is a manuscript songbook that is not yet known to the academic world. It was collected in a Tokyo, Japan, old bookstore in November 2021 and is currently in the possession of a private individual in Korea. The bibliographic characteristics are as follows. Sijochaek is a manuscript volume of 1 book, a total of 57 sheets(excluding the cover). It contains 380 sijo poems and 4 Gasa pieces. The paper was used on the back of the woodblock print Siheonseo(時憲書). There is no information on the person or region that compiled it. The compilation period is estimated to be around the late 1860s based on the publication date of the woodblock print used as the back cover and information on the music. The main characteristics of the organization and the inclusion of lyrics are as follows. The organization is composed in the following order: ① Namchang(male vocal) Gagok Hanbatang, ② Yeochang(female vocal) Gagok Hanbatang, ③ Gasa(歌辭), ④ Singing Theory. There are a total of 281 Namchang Gagok songs, and the songs are divided into Ujo(羽調) and Gyemyeonjo(界面調), and all of the derivative songs of Nong(弄), Nak(樂), and Pyeon(編) are included. In addition, the Isakdaeyeop(二數大葉) derivative song appears under the name of ‘Geosakdaeyeop(擧數大葉)’. What is unique is that there are cases where the song title and the actual lyrics do not match, such as in Chojungdaeyeop(初中大葉), Chosakdaeyeop(初數大葉), Samsakdaeyeop(三數大葉), and Pyeonrak(編樂). This is the result of omitting the song title between the lyrics. The Yeochang Gagok consists of 99 songs, fully compiling the basic musical compositions. Four Gasa are included. The song theory included Gajipungdohyungyong(歌之風度形容) and Jangdando (長短圖). The following is the result of understanding the historical status of Songbook. Sijochaek was revealed to be a songbook produced at a stage when Ujo, Gyemyeonjo, Sogagok(小歌曲), and Yeochang were firmly established in Gagok Hanbatang and Isakdaeyeop derivative songs were differentiated. This can be said to be a songbook that contains the transitional aspects of the stage in which Junggeo(中擧) and Pyeonggeo(平擧) were differentiated before the appearance of Gagokwonryu(歌曲源流), which fully contains the derivative songs of Isakdaeyeop, after Sigagok(詩歌曲), which only features Dugeo(頭擧), and Heungbibu(興比賦).
