초록
This paper intends to challenge the ammuption prevailing among researchers that the automatic annotation of grammatical information into the texts written by learners of English is a waste of time. Apart from other studies previously done, the scripts used for this study were those written by Korean learners at different proficiency levels and CLAWS were used to annotate grammatical information of learner language. Then the accuracy of CLAWS were manually checked by running Keyness in WordSmith, which allows the researcher to compare the probability of difference between the automatically tagged scripts and the manually corrected scripts. The accuracy of CLAWS tagged into learner language was surprisingly high across the part-of-speech, except for relatives and determiners and the incomplete language ability of learners was not responsible for most of tag errors. Further study with the reliable size and number of written scripts and the scripts written from the various exam tasks, however, is required to ensure the generalisability of the result.
