초록

Automatic analysis of learner language is a promising area, as large corpora of learner language are increasingly available and more techniques from Natural Language Processing research have been introduced to learner language research. This paper surveys three application areas of automatic analysis for understanding and possibly assessing leaner’s language competence. First, the learner’s lexical proficiency can be automatically measured using a computer program, namely, Lexical Complexity Analyzer. Second, syntactic complexity of the text can be computed using L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer. These programs compute a number of lexical and syntactic measures of writing competence with high accuracy. Third, taking a more holistic approach, Multi-dimensional Analysis is introduced, which is a statistical technique to profile the learner’s text based on linguistic features. The paper concludes with a remark on prospects for automatic analysis of leaner language as well as some limitations of the current automatic approach.
