Abstract

This paper aims to analyse what is the important role of nominal gender assignment and its agreement in the pronominal domain. For this analysis I dealt with Dutch language. Dutch has a two-way gender system that distinguishes between neuter and common nouns. Gender can be seen as a lexically-specified property of nouns, which is part of a noun's lexical entry than being computed online. Dutch gender is expressed on determiners, attributive adjectives and pronouns. But there is an mismatch exists between nominal gender assignment and gender agreement in the pronominal domain. In pronominal reference the gender of the pronoun is not always in accordance with the gender of the corresponding noun. The pronoun sometimes agrees with the properties of the noun’s referent, rather than the lexical gender of the noun. This semantic agreement is based on the degree of individuation of the referent, whereby the common/masculine gender pronoun is used for referents with a high degree of individuation and the neuter gender pronoun for referents of low individuation.
